MEXICO: Calderon Labels Most Drug War Dead As Criminals.
AP/MIAMI HERALD/ Speaking at a tourism conference, President Felipe Calderon claimed that few innocent civilians are among the 23,000 who have died in the drug wars and that 90% of those killed were tied to the narco gangs. Calderon insisted that police officers and soldiers make up less than 5% of deaths and bystanders or other innocents even less. He made these comments two days after a daylight gunbattle killed six people and wounded five in Acapulco's tourist zone. Among the dead were a mother and her 8-year-old child. A federal police officer and another bystander also were killed. Calderon said Mexico has an "image problem" but is committed to being safe for tourists.
