MEXICO: Disguised Gunmen Steal $13 Million In Oaxaca.

   Six masked gunmen dressed in company clothing broke into a Cometra currency transport facility in Oaxaca, subdued four guards... and left with 157 million pesos/$13 million usd.
   No one was injured.

MEXICO: 17 Feb UPDATE: 15 Injured As Oaxaca Teachers Protest, Clash With Police During Calderon Visit.

     Twelve teachers and 3 photographers were injured in Oaxaca as teachers and police clashed for hours during a tear gas clouded protest over a visit by President Felipe Calderon.
   The three reporters filed a criminal complaint against the state and federal police for assault.
   Two teachers are hospitalized in serious condition,
   The protest leaders said they are against a decree that Calderon just signed giving parents tax breaks on private school tuition. They believe it undermines public schools and have threatened more protests and roadblocks.
   During a similar protest in 2006, a least a dozen people died in Oaxaca and paralyzed it for five months, killing the important tourist trade.

MEXICO: 8 Dead, 12 Wounded In Oaxaca Land Dispute.

   A simmering 20-year dispute over 400 hectares (988 acres) turned into a massacre between the villages of San Sebastian Nopalera and Zimatlan de Lazaro Cardenas leaving 8 dead and 12 wounded.
    The towns are located 300 kilometers (186 miles) west of Oaxaca city in the Mixtec region of Oaxaca.
    Although the situation was tense for more than two months only 15 officers were sent to control the growing unrest.

EL SALVADOR / MEXICO: 23 Dec. UPDATE: Mexico Reverses Opinion, Will Investigate Oaxacan Migrants Abductions.

      In a sudden reversal, Mexico's human rights commission has opened an investigation into the 16 December disappearance of some 50 migrants, after hearing from 18 migrants who said they witnessed the abductions.
      El Salvador had denounced the abduction of some 50 migrants by gunmen from a train in Chahuites, Oaxaca but Mexican officials at first denied the kidnapping report.
      Migrants described that gunmen boarded a train, robbed and hit the stowaways with machetes and took many of them away at gunpoint.
      Migrants are often taken by narcos as new recruits.

MEXICO: American Found Dead In Oaxaca.

AP/      The body of a Californian living in Mexico was found behind a police station in Santa Maria Coyotepec, a town southwest of Oaxaca City.   Homicide is suspected since his body suffered multiple machete wounds.
      Real estate developer Lane Gilbert, 46, of Marin County was last seen on 27 August leaving his home in San Andres Huayapan.

MEXICO:1ST UPDATE: Number of Dead, Missing Drastically Revised In Oaxaca Landslide.

LINK CHANGE/ NYTIMES/  28 SEPT/   An early report--- by Oaxaca's controversial lame-duck governor Ulises Ruiz that 300 homes were covered and 1,000 people were dead from a massive early morning landslide in the indigena village of Santa Maria Tlahuitoltepec--- were highly overblown.  It appears that only 11 people — three adults and eight children — were confirmed as missing while the landslide buried four houses and threatened 30 more.

MEXICO: Heavy Flooding Hits Tabasco, Veracruz, Chiapas and Oaxaca.

AP/       An estimated 500,000 people are homeless in southern Mexico after escaping floods from weeks of torrential rains. The states of Tabasco, Veracruz, Chiapas and Oaxaca are suffering the heaviest rains. Tens of thousands are sleeping on the roofs of their homes, refusing to abandon their possessions. More rain is predicted. The region has already received TWICE the amount of rainfall that normally falls during the season that doesn't end until November.

Mexico's Supreme Court Rules Oaxacan Governor Violated Citizen's Rights.

Mexico’s Supreme Court ruled that Oaxaca Gov. Ulises Ruiz’s government violated individual rights during disturbances from May 2006 to January 2007 that saw 20 people die.
The high court said “The governor of the state of Oaxaca bears clear and plain responsibility” for what happened.
