MEXICO: Garcia Mayor Survives Another Ambush; Controversial Atty Gen. Chavez Chavez Resigns; Reward for US Agent Shootings Now Over $5 Million Usd.

    Garcia Mayor Jaime Rodriguez (pictured left) has survived his second ambush in just over a month.
    About 40 gunmen attacked the mayor's caravan, killing  his bodyguard and wounding four others.
  On 25 February, his bodyguards killed three gunmen who also tried to kill the mayor of the prosperous Monterrey suburb.

  Controversial Attorney General Arturo Chavez Chavez (pictured) has resigned after only 18 months, the second top lawyer to do so since Calderon took office in 2006.
   Chavez, a former prosecutor in Chihuahua, was strongly denounced by the human rights community because of his many botched prosecutions in the murders of hundreds of women in the Cd. Juarez.
He was described as largely ineffective as Atty General but fiercely loyal to Calderon.

The result of cocaine drug lord Arturo Beltran Leyva's death could be more killing during a war for succession or as rivals move in on his group's turf. "The weakening of any cartel can be seen as an opportunity by another that is fighting for territory," Arturo Chavez said. And the gang might retaliate against federal officials. "I think we're going to see blowback," said Scott Stewart, at Stratfor in Austin, Texas.

Mexico's Calderon Replaces Attorney General In Drug Fight.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon has replaced the top official in the struggle against drug cartels. Arturo Chavez Chavez, a former deputy interior minister, will take over for Eduardo Medina Mora as new attorney general.
“There was a general disappointment with the performance of Medina Mora,” said one analyst. “It was the military and the public security ministry that were tracking down the cartel capos and the attorney general’s office was lagging behind.”
Calderon also named Juan Jose Suarez Coppel as chief executive officer of Pemex and Francisco Javier Mayorga as the new agriculture minister.
