The Cuban government released Juan Carlos Gonzalez Marcos, alias “Panfilo,” from prison after he was sentenced to two years behind bars for drunkenly denouncing food shortages on the communist-ruled island before television cameras. The 48-year-old Panfilo was released from prison and sent to a psychiatrist to be treated for alcoholism. He got international attention when his denunciation was posted on YouTube and viewed over 450,000 times.

Cuban Who Cried Hunger, Denied Appeal. Gets 2 Years in Prison.

A Cuban appeals court upheld a two-year prison sentence for a Havana man jailed last month after he appeared in a widely viewed YouTube video shouting there was hunger in Cuba.
Juan Carlos Gonzalez Marcos, known as "Panfilo," asked that his sentence for the crime of "dangerousness" be reduced, but a panel of judges refused.

Cuban Exiles Support Man Jailed For Demanding Food.

An international campaign has begun to release a Cuban man imprisoned two years ago for publicly criticising the lack of food.
Charges were brought after an obviously drunk Juan Carlos Gonzalez, Aka "Panfilo," interrupted a live Cuban television interview and shouted “We want food! What we need here is food! There’s no food, and we’re terribly hungry.”
