BOLIVIA : Thieves Steal Jewels From Religious Statue; Evo Accuses And Offends Church Officials.
On Monday...thieves stripped the statue of Bolivia's patron saint...Our Lady of Copacabana...of 18 precious jewels and gold.
President Evo Morales promptly charged that the Catholic Church was involved in a recent series of church thefts.
The Catholic Bishops called his remarks 'incredibly hurtful.'
But 3 clergy were arrested along with 3 others.
9 churches in southern Potosi province were also robbed recently.
Morales insists that the robberies are inside jobs...and noted that the clergy hold the keys.
