Another bizarre chapter in the tale of ex-New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson's Cuban "mission of mercy"...to seek the release of USA prisoner Alan Gross...serving 15 years there for espionage.
Cuban officials now have denied Richardson was even invited to La Habana...and rejected his request to see Gross as slander... after he allegedly described Gross as a "hostage".
"Richardson was reminded that Cuba is a sovereign country that does not accept blackmail, pressure or arrogance," said a Cuban statement.
Richardson says he is stunned by the snub...and bitter about his failed effort.
"What I think is there are some hardline elements in the Cuban government that basically don't want to improve the relationship with the United States," claimed Richardson.
