COLOMBIA: The High Price Of Gold: Mercury Pollutes Bahia Buenaventura.

  A recent study reveals as much as 3 times the recommended level of mercury in Colombia's biggest port, Buenaventura Bay, where the Dagua River empties into the Pacific Ocean.
   The dangerous poison may be a possible byproduct of illegal mining even as new authorized projects are being greenlighted.
   Since August, the government has targeted illegal gold mining operations as the price of the metal has soared. Environment Minister Beatriz Uribe shut down 48 illicit mining operations, has told reporters that "illegal mining is poisoning us."
