TELEGRAPH/    The always controversial Erika Steinbach(pictured), head of a league representing the 12.5 million Germans expelled from eastern Europe after the war, resigned from Chancelor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic (CDU) party after she was criticized for saying Poland mobilized its armed forces months before Germany's 1939 invasion.
Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said Steinbach's statement contradicted historical facts and also damaged Germany's image.
