PERU: 1st UPDATE: Religious Activist Wins Delay Appeal From Expulsion.
LINK CHANGE/ LAHT/ A British religious activist, Brother Paul McAuley, 62, will not be expelled pending appeal after he was ordered to leave Peru for allegedly inciting unrest among native peoples protesting environmental damage from oil drilling in the Amazon rainforest. McAuley, a lay activist with the La Salle Christian Brothers, has worked in Peru for two decades. Peru officials informed McAuley that it was revoking his residency because he was engaged in activities "that put in risk the security of the state, public order and the national defense." His lawyers had claimed that their client was not properly notified and not accorded the right to defend himself or to due process.
