ARGENTINA: A Streaking Nude Maradona Won't Help Kirchners In Time For 2011.
BBW/ Yesterday, the WSJ reported that the Kirchners' popularity was on the upswing with perhaps enough momentum for the 2011 presidential election. Today, BBW (BloombergBusinessWeek) contends that even a victory in the World Cup won't be enough to help the Kirchners - in the long run. “There’s a strong link between politics and soccer,” said political analyst Rosendo Fraga.“Winning a World Cup has political effects, but they last weeks or months.” To shore-up soccer voters, President Cristina Kirchner gave away almost 1.2 million digital cable-television decoders to provide access to high-definition coverage of matches on free government channels and obtained the TV rights for free Argentine Soccer Federation games after the league broke a contract with cable providers. “They think that a cheerful society will vote for them, but the Kirchners’ cycle is over,” said pollster Jorge Giacobbe. “The government is worried, if not desperate to improve its relationship with society, and it grasps any opportunity. It was the bicentennial celebrations in May and now it’s the World Cup.”
