AUSTIN AMERICAN STATESMAN/ The dense plume of angry black smoke was visible for 10 miles from the site of a kamikaze attack on a NW Austin office building that housed the IRS and a few miles from where this news blog is compiled. Computer engineer "Joe" Stack, 53, flew his small plane, loaded with fuel, into the Echelon 1 building, killing himself and a 67-year-old IRS employee, injuring 13, one seriously and virtually destroying the 4-story building. In a long screed reportedly posted on the internet, Stack railed against the US government, its tax code and the IRS.
Laid-back Austin, best known for its abundance of live music, state politicians, computer technology and successful college athletics, has suffered a small taste of terrorism of the domestic variety.
