At the start of Mexico's "high" tourist season, comes news that will give any potential visitor a renewed concern about safety. There was the recent assassination of a journalist/lawyer in quiet little Tulum in Q.Roo just south of Cancun, and then the drug gang kidnapping of two businessmen in picturesque San Cristobal De Las Casas, indicating that indiscriminate violence is spreading throughout the Mexico favored by tourists.
On New year's Eve, near Durango, a 33-year-old American, Agustin Roberto "Bobby" Salcedo, was abducted along with five other men from a restaurant while visiting family in the city of Gomez Palacio. His body was later recovered along with the others. Salcedo had been a member of the El Monte, California school board since 2004. He was finishing a doctorate at UCLA.
