About 110 Cubans have appealed to the Spanish government saying that they were discriminated against and denied new passports because their Spanish grandmothers lost their Spanish citizenship when they married Cuban men and settled in Cuba.
Under Spain's "Law of Historic Memory," of December 2007, Cuban children and grandchildren of Spanish citizens who moved to the island can apply for Spanish citizenship and obtain Spanish passports. 52,000 Cubans have filed applications, 23,256 cases have been approved and 2,001 have been rejected. The rest are being processed.
