Lula's handpicked candidate to replace himself as Brasil's president,Dilma Rousseff, badly trailed Sao Paulo Governor Jose Serra in recent polling.
Congressional member and former presidential hopeful Ciro Gomes moved up to second place in the Ibope poll. The poll gave Serra 34% of votes in a runoff election, Gomes with 17% and Rousseff 15% of the votes.
