A lynch mob destroyed at least four vehicles and looted a police station in the eastern hamlet of Minero after failing to kill the suspected murderer of a taxi driver.
Police say several local residents learned of the arrest and went to the police station to demand his surrender.
When police refused, all hell broke loose.
“The enraged mob clashed with police, burned the (station) and carried away furniture, computers, motorcycles,” a spokesman said adding that provincial authorities sent 30 officers to “rescue” the detainee and six police being held against their will in Minero and took them to Santa Cruz.
Some defend lynchings as an example of the “community justice” in Indian communities that exist on the margins of state institutions.
