The Mexican daily Milenio reports that former PAN presidential candidate Diego Fernandez de Cevallos talked his captors into accepting $30 million in USD instead of  $100 million for his freedom.
Recently freed from capture, Fernandez de Cevallos also revealed that his kidnappers were ideologically motivated and viewed him as "an enemy of their cause."
Fernandez de Cevallos, 69, was released more than seven months after his kidnapping.
He ran unsuccessfully for president in 1994 and went missing in May when his vehicle was found near his ranch in Queretaro.
In October, some media reported that his family paid more than $20 million in ransom but that was never confirmed.
His release was announced by the leftist group "Network for Global Transformation" in statements posted on a blog.
