COSTA RICA: Currency Is World's Best Gainer, "Worrisome'" For Exports.
BLOOMBERG/ Costa Rica's currency, the colon, is the world’s biggest gainer so this year. That is “worrisome,” for exporters claims Costa Rican Vice President-elect Luis Liberman. The colon is appreciating because of the "carry trade," where investors borrow in nations with low interest rates to buy higher-yielding assets. Costa Rica’s benchmark rate is 5.75%, higher than nearly zero in the U.S., 1% in the euro-zone and 0.1% in Japan.
