COSTA RICA: Court Permits Open-Pit Gold Mining In Virgin Forest.

REUTERS/    The nation's Supreme Court ruled that a small Canadian company can proceed with plans to conduct open-pit gold mining in the forests near the Nicaraguan border. The ruling reversed an October 2008 order to stop construction on the Crucitas mine and has angered environmentalists. President Oscar Arias reversed a moratorium on open-pit mining after taking office and declared the Crucitas project of "national interest."
