26 years after world's worst nuclear accident at Chernobyl...the first partial section...of an enormous 2-part...1.3 billion euro/$2 bn...cover shield over the reactor building...has been rolled out...near the long abandoned town of Pripyat.
The work so far has taken 7 months.
The 1986 disaster caused more than 6,000 cases of cancer, at least 28 direct deaths...and 115,000 evacuations.
Officials are rushing to complete the entire cover before 2015...when the expected 30-year life of the existing sarcophagus declines.
The cover shelter will only block radiation while the reactor is dismantled.
