It was a rude...and costly...awakening for some Monday...waiting in the customs line at La Habana's airport.
Travelers saw the cost of all goods weighing over 30 kilos...suddenly jump to $10 usd per kilo.
The increase from the much lower customs rates was announced 2 months ago.
Permanent residents get a once per year break...payable in moneda nacional...but non permanent residents must pay in costlier chavitos/ the usd based but reduced currency.
The new regs will especially hit hard 'mulas'...those who travel back and forth carrying hard to get goods for families and relatives on the island.
