Much of western Cuba...including La Habana and Canadian tourists' favorite beach at Varadero...suddenly went black...between 8:15-10 p.m...after a major transmission line failed.
The apagon killed AC and fans on a muggy 30C/90F night...for an estimated 5 million people in 10 provinces...but power returned...at the latest...about 5 hours later.
Shorter outages were also reported in distant Santiago de Cuba, Ciego de Avila and Pinar del Rio.
Frequent apagones were common for decades because of the isla's ancient infrastructure...but were declared less likely after hundreds of diesel generators were purchased from and financed by Beijing...and placed across the island.
NEW!!! Dissident blogger Yoani Sanchez's impressions.
