MOLDOVA: EU Crisis Drastically Cutting Migrants' Remittances...By 25%.

WSJ/ G. Fairclough

  Moldova is Europe's poorest nation.
It is also highly dependent on money sent back by migrants abroad...from economies that are only slowly recovering.
In 2008, remittances to Moldova were $1.7bn...more than 25% of GDP.
In 2010, they were about $1.2bn...down more than 25%.
"Migrants are earning less and remitting less," said a migration specialist.  "It has hit households and the state budget hard."
Perhaps 33% of Moldovan households receive remittances...and in more than half they account for more than half of total income.
