A high profile 8-day police crackdown by 31 governors and the mayor of Mexico City aimed at lower-grade offenses like car thefts and muggings...is almost over.
The effort called CONAGO 1 has featured many foto ops and press conferences.
So far, over 3,000 suspects have been arrested, 116 guns found and 1,122 stolen cars recovered.
But since December 2006, almost 40,000 have been killed in President Calderon's war against narcos.
And, many citizens complain that fighting crime is the police's job...and that a limited campaign is just that...limited.
"Why should something surprise us or make news when it should be the everyday work of our police?" wrote Alejandro Marti, a sporting goods magnate whose son was kidnapped and slain three years ago in a crime that gripped the country.
Another commentator groused on Twitter: "This week, yes, the police will do their jobs, later it's the same impunity."
