ITALY / BRASIL: 10 June UPDATE: Italy Recalls Ambassador As Anger Swells Over Brasilia's Refusal to Extradite Terrorist Battisti; Hague Appeal Sought; 2014 World Cup Boycott Threat.

AP/ GUARDIAN

Italy has recalled its envoy to Brasil...after Brasilia's highest court refused to extradite a wanted fugitive.
Italy now insists it will take the case of former leftist rebel Cesare Battisti to The Hague...after Brasil's judges again refused to extradite him...and set him free.
Italy's FM Franco Frattini called the ruling...a "political decision, not a legal one".

Battisti, 56, was a member of a militant Italian leftist group.
He was convicted of 4 murders there in the 1970's.

"I am guilty, as I have often said, of having participated in an armed group with a subversive aim and of having carried weapons. But I never shot anyone," Battisti has written.

An Italian victims' group is even calling for boycott of 2014 World Cup in Brasil.
