A recently released 2010 survey claims Brasil...for the first time...has become a “majority minority” nation...with less than half the population identified as white.
Every minority racial group – officially “black,” “pardo” (mixed), “yellow” and “indigena” – has grown since 2000.
But “White” was the only group that shrank...to 48% of the population from 53% a decade ago.
“The phenomenon I perceive are people getting out of that pressure to whiten themselves, and assuming their blackness,” says a S. Paulo artist.
