GUARDIAN/ R. Carroll
In Buenos Aires, EL GUARDIAN weekly columnist Juan Terranova is accused by feminists of threatening rape while defending the "piropos"/inappropriate flattery culture.
These comments from males to women range from flirtatious compliments to sexual catcalls and are common throughout Latin America.
They are practically a way of life in Cuba...and always shocked my gringo upbringing.
Anyway, in his column, Terranova imagined meeting-up with a young feminist activist who leads a campaign against sexual harassment and sharing such inappropriate comments.
A feminist group called Hollaback demanded his firing.
But EL GUARDIAN resisted...citing freedom of speech...until Fiat and Lacoste pulled their advertising.
Then...it apologized and sacked Terranova.
