Since December 2007, the people of Belarus have been able to get 17 hours of news daily about their nation...from neighboring Poland on Belsat TV.
This modern day satellite "samizdat" with a $9 Mn annual budget is financed 2/3 by the Polish government and 1/3 by the Swedes.
Recently violent crackdowns in Minsk have made this alternative news site even more important for news about Belarus...within Belarus.
“It’s about giving something back — in this case providing independent news to Belarus,” said Belsat TV founder Agnieszka Romaszewska-Guzy (pictured). “After all, the underground opposition in Poland during the 1970s and later under martial law depended so much on news from international broadcasting stations.”
