More residents fled as the Tungurahua volcano hurled large boulders almost a mile from its crater.
Officials kept schools closed for the 3rd straight day.
"The smallest blocks are that size of an automobile while the biggest reach the size of a truck," said a geologist.
Smoke from the volcano 84 miles/135 kilometers Quito, called Tungurahua/ "throat of fire" in Quechua language, has risen more than 7 kilometers/ 4 miles into the atmosphere.
The volcano, active since 1999, killed four in 2006 with thousands evacuated.
