The UN's highest court told Nicaragua and Costa Rica to keep all personnel away from a their disputed border on the San Juan River.
The preliminary order calls for both sides to withdraw all troops, police, and security personnel from the contested 1.2-square-mile area but does not prevent Nicaragua from continuing to dredge its San Juan River.
Both nations claim the Portillos Islands in the San Juan River which forms the border between them.
The court told both countries to "refrain from any actions which might aggravate or extend the dispute".
