Just days after Brasil's outgoing President Lula da Silva recognized an independent Palestinian state, Argentina has joined the chorus.
Foreign Minister Hector Timerman said :"The Argentine government recognizes Palestine as a free and independent state within the borders defined in 1967."
Brasil's announcement was criticized by Israel and US lawmakers as "severely misguided" and "regrettable."
Argentina said its recognition of a Palestinian state reflected a general consensus in the Mercosur.
07 DEC. UPDATE : Israeli spokesman Yigal Palmor calls the moves ( by Argentina and Brasil) irresponsible. "They never made any contribution to [the peace process]... and now they're making a decision that is completely contrary to everything that has been agreed so far," he said.
