President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner's husband, former president Nestor Kirchner, 60, is dead after a heart attack in their home town of El Calafate.
The ex-president had been hospitalized twice this year with heart problems; last month, with an implanted stent and in February, with surgery to clear an artery blockage.
While Nestor Kirchner was seen as the “strongman” behind his wife’s rule, “economic decisions in the near future are unlikely to be much affected,” says analyst Guillermo Mondino.
In a ghoulish twist, Argentine bonds and stocks GAINED as his death increased speculation that opposition lawmakers will win next year’s election and reverse the country’s debt management policies.
“He was seen as a potential candidate for the October elections to succeed his wife so now the political map is going to be wide open,” said economist Alberto Ramos. “Nobody really knows who will be the key candidates.”
