Since 2006, almost 600 bus drivers have been murdered on the job. This year, in just six months, 62 drivers and 31 drivers' assistants were killed.
Gangs charge drivers and bus owners a protection tax to transit gang-controlled neighborhoods. If they don't pay, the gangs send hit men.
"Driving a bus is, and has been for a while, the most dangerous job in the country. And this is a country already struggling with crime," said human rights activist Karla Campos.
