BOLIVIA: 1ST UPDATE: Fires Increase; Now Consume 2 Million Hectares.

NEW LINK/ LAHT/ 24 AUG/     The number of fires set by the indigena people to clear lands for planting has increased to almost 34,000, destroying almost 2 million hectares (4.9 million acres) of land and more than 60 houses. The worst of the destruction is in the Amazon and eastern regions, near Brasil. Intensive smoke delayed numerous flights and forced several airports to close. President Evo Morales asked for air fire suppression help from Brasil And Argentina. If this trend continues, in two weeks we’re going to equal what we had in 2004” when some 50,000 fires were set on 6 million hectares (15 million acres), equal to 6% of Bolivia’s territory,warned official Cliver Rocha.
