ARGENTINA: Which Kirchner Will Extend The Presidential Reign?

MPRESS/       It might be a case of "Tag Team" Kirchners when it come to Argentina's presidency, with each taking turns running the country. According to a new poll, current President Cristina Kirchner, who succeeded her husband Nestor, now has a better image but many believe her husband Nestor Kirchner will occupy the office in 2011. “Mrs. Kirchner has a better image but the interviews clearly point out that people feel he (Nestor) represents power and authority”, said pollster Alejandro Cattenberg from Poliarquía. Both have expressed a desire to run for president in 2011 and the government only says that it could be “a he penguin or a she penguin”, as the Kirchners are known because they come from the southernmost province. But the economy under President Cristina has been on a roll. A record 55 million-ton soybean harvest helped the central bank boost reserves to an all-time high of $51.1 billion usd in July and raised tax revenue 39% higher in June from a year earlier. It posted a budget surplus before interest payments of 2.7 billion pesos in June. The government has run a that primary surplus every month since December 2008. “Commodity exports have been huge for Argentina,” said an observer. “That’s the big driver here. It’s produced an account surplus and higher growth relative to other markets.”
