ARGENTINA: Glacier Protection Bill Could Doom Barrick's Pascua Lama Gold Mine.
REUTERS/ Luis Andres Henao/ A proposed bill to protect glaciers and the fresh water supplied by them-- by banning mining in ice zones-- could hinder a new Barrick gold mine, shutter some projects and slow investment. The popular bill passed the lower house of Congress and moves to the Senate with President Cristina Kirchner saying she would sign it this time. The law would make it expensive --perhaps impossible -- for Barrick Gold to develop Pascua Lama, a mega-gold find on the Argentina-Chile border.
