PANAMA: 2ND UPDATE: Temporary Accord Signed In Changuinola After Violent Strike Left 2 Dead, 120 Injured.
LAHT/ 2ND UPDATE/ 13 July/ In the western city of Changuinola, a temporary accord has been signed after strikers and police clashed leaving 2 dead and 120 injured and 100 arrested. The workers at the Bocas Fruit Company struck for many days after the firm failed to pay them. The workers demanded back wages and repeal of the recently approved so-called “chorizo law,” that restricts labor unions and the right to strike. The government has committed itself to suspend “temporarily” three controversial measures affecting workers’ rights until a “national accord” on the matter is achieved within 90 days.
