There are about 400 pageants each year in Colombia that may shut down villages for days. There beauty pageants bring people together. “It completely transcends and permeates parts of the culture that you would think would be immune,” said Carl Bower, whose project, “Chica Barbie,” was a finalist for the New York Photo Festival Book Award this year. He spent 15 years photographing beauty contests in Colombia.
