BLOOMBERG/ Four opposition parties that vowed to cut spending and avoid a Greek-style crisis said they would try to form their own government after winning a majority in elections and NOT join with PM Robert Fico’s party. Fico's Smer Party campaigned to keep the welfare state intact. Slovakia’s debt may swell to 7.4% of GDP this year, compared with a target of 5.5%, unless the new government takes “significant” steps. President Ivan Gasparovic has the sole right to appoint a prime minister and a government and “wants to ask the party with the most seats to form a government because it deserves to have such a possibility,” though he also wants a guarantee of a majority and will decide “depending on the situation.
