PERU: Strike And Blockade Shuts Giant Smelter; Violence Feared.
AFP/ GOOGLE NEWS/ Thousands of workers blocked a major highway near an 82-year-old US-owned smelter over a long simmering environmental dispute. A previous blockade at the Doe Run complex -- which refines lead, zinc, gold and copper -- turned violent last year. "The town is totally paralyzed, 3,500 workers are taking part in the action with the support of the entire population of La Oroya," said union leader Roberto Guzman. Over 2,000 police and 500 troops are guarding the highway. President Garcia threatened to shut the complex down if it cannot resume operations by 24 July.
