AP/MIAMI HERALD/ Pedro Alcantara de Souza, the head of a union of landless farmers in Para, was shot in the head five times by two men on motorcycles. Souza stepped down in 1996 as a city councilman after 14 years. He led numerous occupations of massive farms considered unproductive. The government says nearly half of Brasil's arable land belongs to only 1% of the population.
