BRASIL: Lula Criticized For Silence On Cuban Dissident's Death.
EARTH TIMES/ President Lula da Silva's silence when the death of dissident Orlando Zapata Tamayo was revealed during his recent visit with the Castros in Cuba is bringing criticism from dissidents and political opponents alike. "Lula should have complained. We are talking about universal values, which the Lula government defends very well," said Cuban dissident Manuel Cuesta. "When it deals with countries that it is friendly with, as is the case with Cuba, (Brasil) says nothing, even if there are evident human rights violations," complained former foreign minister Luiz Felipe Lampreia. "When the case involves countries with whom it is not so friendly, (Brasil) is capable of being quite strident," he said.
