President Hugo Chávez called Venezuelan Ilich Ramírez Sánchez, AKA "Carlos the Jackal," a "revolutionary fighter." Sanchez is connected to hijackings and terror attacks across Europe in the 1970s-80s. “I defend him. I don’t care what they say tomorrow in Europe,” said Chavez. In the same speech, Chavez went on to praise Robert Mugabe and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, calling them "brothers." He also had positive words about Idi Amin, accused of killing 300,000 Ugandans in the 70s. "We thought he was a cannibal. I have doubts. I don't know, maybe he was a great nationalist, a patriot."
"This was planned and premeditated," said one analyst."He wants to cement his reputation as the enfant terrible on the international stage."
