A new Gazprom pipeline called Nord Stream planned under the Baltic Sea is driving a political wedge between Eastern and Western Europe.
“Yesterday tanks, today oil,” said Zbigniew Siemiatkowski, a former Polish security chief.
Being able to close one pipeline makes shutoffs to Eastern Europe more likely, said former President Carter aide, Zbigniew Brzezinski. He labels the pipelines a ploy to “separate Central Europe from Western Europe insofar as dependence on Russian energy is concerned.”
